File consists of chart book of Andrew D. MacLean maintained on a journey through the Mediterranean [on the SS Empress of Scotland?], comprising three maps tracing the ship's movement from Gibraltar to the Aegean. Pasted into book are pages of naval ensigns of many countries, taken from a publication.
Photographs are pasted to inside of back cover and depict locations along the route: Messina; Malta; Imbros Island; Lemnos; and Mitylene. Also includes magazine clipping of warships, one of which is an early aircraft carrier.
Annotations refer to other maps not present in this book. Map pages backed with canvas. A portion of the central map was excised in cutting out six flags from page pasted on verso.
See F 4566-7 for related photographs. Annotations on inside of front cover [by Joan Howe and Rory H. MacLean?] suggesting that ship was RMS Cleopatra or Catania countered by annotation by Andrew D. MacLean on first map: Estimated speed of S.S. "Empress of Scotland" = 16 knots. Dates given in annotations match Greek calendar for 1917.
