2 volumes of textual records
Series consists of registers, also known as probate and administration books, which contain the court's copy of all grants of probate (in estates with wills) and administration (estates without wills) issued by the Surrogate Court for the Home District at York (1800-1849), of the County of York (1850-1851; 1867-), of the United Counties of York, Ontario and Peel (1852-1853) and of the United Counties of York and Peel (1854-1866).
The first guardianship grant in the registers appears in the period 1846 to 1848. If any Guardianship Registers were used prior to this time, none has survived.
Copies of wills are at first included with grants of probate in all registers up to Register #22 (1884-1885). Copies of wills are later recorded not on the Register itself but in Appendices to the Registers #23 to #33 (1886-1912).
Prior to 1800, the Home District court house was located at Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake). For pre-1800 records from this area, therefore, see also Series RG 22-234.
The registers for 1970 have not survived and were not transferred to the Archives.
