Ontario Government Record Series RG 16-332
25 audio discs
Series consists of recordings of lectures presented by professors from the Ontario Agricultural College and the Ontario Veterinary College, as well as recordings of other agricultural events organized in various locations around southwestern Ontario, such as Ontario Crop Improvement Association meetings. One recording captured an advertisement of a company that sells milking machines.
The recordings were made by Wingham radio station CKNX, which worked in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture to keep its rural listeners in southwestern Ontario abreast of agricultural research and practices. Because of the interdependent relationship between the radio station and the Ontario Agricultural College and offices of Agricultural Representatives, the station played a major role in the department's outreach activities.
The discs in this series comprise a tiny, surviving proportion of the programming aired by the Wingham radio station during this time period because a fire in 1962 destroyed the station and its contents. However, the discs are strongly representative of the local agricultural focus that earned the station a reputation for responding to the needs of its audience in southwestern Ontario.
The 25 radio transcription discs recorded by Wingham radion station CKNX came to the archives from two separate donations. Five 16" discs and one 12" disc were transferred from the Ontario Agricultural Museum. The other nineteen 16" discs were donated to the archives by a private donor, Myrna Inglis.
The six discs from the Ontario Agricultural Museum were transferred to the Archives of Ontario in April 1999 when the ministry divested operation of the museum to Country Heritage Experiences Inc. Research suggests the discs were given to the ministry in 1949-1950 by the Wingham station and later donated by the ministry to the museum.
The remaining nineteen, 16" discs were donated to the Archives by Walkerton resident Myrna Inglis, who found the discs abandoned in the basement of a Walkerton office building formerly occupied by the Bruce County agricultural representative office and its predecessors.
