Scope and Content

Sub-series consists of correspondence relating to surveys received by the Surveyor General.

Included are: orders-in-council based on the petitions of individuals; survey instructions and orders, internal correspondence and memoranda on the operations of the Office of the Surveyor General; correspondence with surveyors, Land Board reports; and descriptions of land.

This correspondence was bound into volumes by the Department of Lands and Forests.

Notes

A card index, covering this sub-series, as well as other records, is held by Crown Land Surveys, Ministry of Natural Resources, in Peterborough. Entries relating to this sub-series contain the phrase "Surveyor's letters", and references are made to the original volume numbers.

Volume RG 1-154-2-1 contains an index to various documents (memoranda, notices, orders-in-council, returns) relating to Yonge Street, which were received between July 1794 and March 1799 and which can be found in this sub-series. These documents are identified in the index by the code "LR".

Following their transfer to the Archives of Ontario, the volume numbers used by the Surveyor General's Office were replaced with new volume numbers. Old and new volume numbers are cross-referenced in the online listing, with the original volume numbers appearing as the "Creator code".
