Scope and Content

Fonds consists predominantly of speeches, correspondence, and printed material of William Hearst.

Speeches cover a variety of subjects, such as patriot matters during the First World War, issues of temperance, Hydro development in Ontario, the granting of the vote to women, the Department of Agriculture, Northern Ontario development, the Housing Committee, and the extension of the term of the Legislature.

The bulk of the correspondence is arranged using Hearst's original six groupings, including: Hydro Electric - Re Radial Railways (consisting of correspondence from government ministers and others concerning the building of electric railways by the Ontario Hydro Electric Railway Commission); Biography of William Hearst (including correspondence relating to biographical information given by Hearst for publication and in answer to queries); Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway (including correspondence relating to the Ontario government's efforts to prevent the Canadian Northern Railway from reducing its services on the T. & N.O. route); General Election 1919 (including correspondence relating to practical arrangements for the election, and to the question as to whether or not the election should be held on the same date as the Prohibition referendum); Housing Question (including correspondence between Hearst and members of the Ontario Housing Committee, and members of the federal Housing Committee); and Miscellaneous (including a letter including information as to James P. Whitney's choice of successor, as well as some correspondence of other Hearst family members.

Fonds also includes miscellaneous printed material, clippings, reports, briefs, and other materials, arranged alphabetically by subject.

Fonds also includes a minute book of the Ontario Housing Committee for 1919, and four scrapbooks, entitled: "Northern Ontario: Its Progress and Development under the Whitney Government," "Speech of Hon. W.J. Hanna -- in reply to motion of the leader of the opposition to `abolish the bar'," "Issues of the Day: Sir James Whitney's address to the electors of Ontario," and "Address of Hon. W.H. Hearst, Minister of Lands, Forests and Mines, in reply to an address on Northern Ontario by Mr. Samuel Clarke, M.P.P. for West Northumberland".

Fonds also includes photographs of William H. Hearst and Hearst family members.

The records were donated to the Archives of Ontario in 1952 and 1953 by Mr. H. Vernon Hearst. Additional materials were donated to the Archives in 1964 and 1967 by Mr. W.I. Hearst of Toronto, Ontario.
