Scope and Content

This series consists of three reels of moving images, two original 16mm films and the third, a 16mm copy of one of the original films. The originals were shot by Charles Shaw Band and document recreational activities and vacations of the Band family.

The film, Hunting Trips, primarily shows hunting scenes taken in Haliburton in 1926. The film captures the hunters' traditions from transportation via Great Lakes passenger steamer to posing for the camera with their catch of deer, ducks and geese. The film also includes some footage of a more formal hunt that features men on horseback in full English-style hunting dress, while ladies observe from the rumble seat of a 1920's touring automobile. These scenes were shot at the Beverley Farms in Aurora. The Bands were members of the North York Hunt Club.

The second original film consists of two compilations of 16 mm home movies, one ca. 1925 in black and white and the second ca. 1940 in color. Together they document the Band family's cottage life in the Wah-wha-tay-see area near Georgian Bay, featuring picnics, boat rides, swimming, tennis, and children playing cricket and tug-of-war. There are also scenes from a dramatization involving several boats and a character who may be Neptune.

The series also includes a 1977 copy of the Band Family vacation film.
