Fonds consists of records documenting the business activities of the W. B. Hamilton Shoe Company Limited, which operated shoe and boot stores throughout Ontario and Canada dating back to the 1860's. Their manufacturing store was located in Toronto.
The records include correspondence and contracts, once framed and displayed in the corporate offices of the company, involving the partnership and dissolution of the firm of Childs and Brown that was the shoe manufacturing business begun in 1844 in Montreal.
Included is a minute book of the company that documents amongst other business transactions the business charter and by-laws, a cashbook and a number of ledgers, one of which is a client purchase ledger that identifies the wholesale clients that dealt with Hamilton Shoes.
Included also are collateral registers which list the retailers that purchased shoes on collateral with a provision that their debt would be paid when business improved. Where debts were not paid W. B. Hamilton Shoes would take over the retailers.
In addition, there are plans depicting the building block in Toronto on 15-17 Front Street, the site of the current Sony Centre (formerly O'Keefe Centre for the Performing Arts), prepared for fire insurance purposes.
The W. B. Hamilton Shoe Company Limited, founded by William B. Hamilton in 1859 from previous partnerships, operated a manufacturing, wholesale and retail boot and shoe company under the business name of W. B. Hamilton Boots and Shoes primarily located in Toronto with stores across Canada.
