Scope and Content

Fonds consists of the colour slide collection of Edward Emery. About half were taken by Emery and the other half were taken by photographers who traded with and sold to him. The collection includes images of steam, diesel, and electric trains, as well as train stations across Canada and the United States. The largest group is that of images of diesel locomotives; however, Edward Emery was most dedicated to documenting the era of the steam locomotive. Also scattered throughout the collection are slides of railway-related scenes, such as rail yards, water towers, and roundhouses.

Many of the locomotives represented in the slides are no longer in service. Some were owned by public transportation organizations and travelled mainlines across the continent; others served private companies and were limited to short runs on company lines. Some mainlines in Canada were operated by major, long-distance railways such as Canadian National Railway (CNR) and Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). Shortlines are often private railways built for specific purposes. Electric trains are driven by overhead power.

The fonds has been arranged into three series, which maintain the original order of the creator.
