Fonds consists of research materials gathered by McBurney and Byers for the writing and publication of four books on historical buildings in Ontario: "Rural roots: pre-Confederation buildings of the York Region of Ontario", "Homesteads: early buildings and families from Kingston to Toronto", "The Governor's road: early buildings and families from Mississauga to London", and "Tavern in the town: early inns and taverns of Ontario".

Records include photographs taken by Hugh Robertson to illustrate the books as well as colour slides used for illustrated talks by the authors. Textual records include interview notes, information on specific buildings, pamphlets, and original and copied datasheets used for the Goulding Architectural Survey of Ontario's pre-confederation buildings, a survey directed by Professor William Goulding of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Toronto.
