Scope and Content

Fonds consists of the records of Melville H. Parker. The fonds has been arranged into three series: slides; album, prints, and negatives; and logbooks. The records detail Parker's life in northwestern Ontario during a period between the 1930s and 1960s when he transported freight for the Patricia Transportation Company and later worked for the Dryden Paper Mill.

During Parker's employment, the Patricia Transportation Company was the primary transporter of freight in the Red Lake District. Red Lake District was an important mining area and many metals and minerals mined there were used in the Second World War effort. Patricia Transportation employees were considered to be essential workers and were not allowed to enlist in the war.

Before an all-weather highway was completed in 1948, supplies were transported by tug-boat, alligator tug, scow, tractor train, and plane. These methods of transport are represented in this fonds and document transportation history, as well as the development of northern communities.
