Scope and Content

Fonds consists of the personal and business records of William Hendrie and some of his relatives. Fonds includes estate papers and a transcribed Hendrie family history. Fonds also contains minute books, correspondence, charters, and stock registers from numerous Hendrie financial interests. These include Hendrie and Company, Hendrie Investment Company, the Kansas and Southwestern Railway Company and the Niagara Falls Park and River Railroad Company.

Fonds also consists of one scrapbook that details the familial and elite social activities of Mary Murray Hendrie, wife of William Hendrie. The scrapbook was given to Mary as a Christmas gift by her children in 1880.

In addition, fonds contains 5 photographs. Subjects are: William, George and John S. Hendrie as well as William Hendrie Jr. with the Duke and Duchess of Connaught and Princess Patricia.

Administrative History or Biographical Sketch

William Hendrie (d. 1906) was a businessman involved in freight transportation and real estate in Toronto, Hamilton, Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, during the late nineteenth century.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Fonds was acquired by the Archives of Ontario in 1986 from George M. Hendrie. The family scrapbook was donated by William Hendrie and Elizabeth Forseth, Mary Murray Hendrie's great-grandchildren in 2010.
