Scope and Content

This fonds consists of the official records of the Western District, including Council Minutes, 1845-1849; Memoranda Book, 1842-1849; Miscellaneous District Papers including School Papers, Petitions, Reports, By-laws and Treasurer's Papers, 1842-1849; and Census and Assessment Rolls, 1813-1874. Some records date after the formation of Essex County. The District Papers are arranged alphabetically by Township and chronologically within each Township.

Fonds includes assessment and other records relating to several lower tier municipalities including Bosanquet; Brooke; Camden and Oxford; Chatham; Colchester; Dawn; Dover; Sombra; Gosfield; Howard; Maidstone; Mersea; Moore; Enniskillen; Plympton; Rochester; Romney; Sandwich; Sarnia; Tilbury; and Warwick.

Administrative History or Biographical Sketch

The District of Hesse was established through a Proclamation dated July 24, 1788 and consisted of the area of Upper Canada west of a line drawn north from Long Point; it was renamed the Western District under Upper Canada Statutes 1792, Chapter 8.
