Scope and Content

This fonds consists of the official records of the District of Newcastle, including Census and Assessment Rolls for some of the townships which comprised the Newcastle District.

This fonds includes assessment and other records from several lower tier municipalities including Alnwick; Asphodel; Belmont; Otonabee; Cartwright; Cavan; Clarke; Cramahe; Darlington; Duoro; Ops; Dummer; Eldon; Emily; Ennismore; Fenelon; Bexley; Haldimand; Hamilton; Harvey; Hope; Port Hope; Manvers; Monaghan; Percy; Seymour; Smith; and Verulam.

Administrative History or Biographical Sketch

The Newcastle District was formed from the original Home District effective January 1, 1802 through a Proclamation issued under Statutes of Upper Canada 1798, Chapter 5.
