Scope and Content

Fonds consists of records created, collected and used by J.C. McRuer documenting his various activities and interests as a lawyer, judge, commissioner and author. The records also provide insight into McRuer's family life.

Arranged into sixteen series, the records include addresses and speeches, research material, legal articles, subject and background files, correspondence (letters and postcards), newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, trial transcripts and notes, publications, memoranda on a variety of subjects, reports, and minutes. Diplomas and awards presented to McRuer are also available.

Fonds also consists of photographs documenting McRuer's boyhood, his military experiences, and various family members. Several photographs also document McRuer and his fellow colleagues.

Fonds also includes a motion picture film of the McRuer family's trip to Europe in 1936. Film includes footage of the unveiling of the Vimy Ridge memorial in France in July 1936 which the family attended, as well as footage of places visited in England, Switzerland and Germany.

The Honourable James Chalmers McRuer, O.C., LL.D., (1890-1985) was a lawyer, judge, commissioner and author in Ontario.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Fonds was acquired by the Archives in various accessions. By 1981, the Archives had already received a number of records from undocumented sources. In June 1987, Katherine McIntyre donated some of McRuer's wartime correspondence with his wife. In July 1987, Katherine McIntyre, John McRuer, and Mary Louise Gaby donated photographs and miscellaneous files. In January 1995 the remaining records were donated by Ms. Gaby after Patrick Boyer had prolonged access to them to write a biography on McRuer. In 2004 Ms. Gaby donated the motion picture film.
