Administrative History or Biographical Sketch

The John Langton family was involved in art, public service and writing in Upper Canada during the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

John Langton (1808-1894) was a provincial and national politician in Canada during the latter half of the nineteenth century, serving as Auditor-General and Deputy Minister of Finance.

William Langton (fl. 1837-1846) was the brother of Canadian politician John Langton, and lived in England where he kept in close correspondence with family in Upper Canada during the mid-nineteenth century.

Anne Langton was an nineteenth-century artist who worked in the genres of portrait miniature painting on ivory and landscape sketching on paper.

William Alexander Langton (1854-1933) was the son of politician John Langton, and published a collection of his father's letters in 1926 entitled "Early Days in Upper Canada".

Hugh Hornby Langton (1862-1953) was the youngest son of John Langton, and prepared a typescript manuscript for a new edition of his father's letters, "Early Days in Upper Canada", as well as publishing much of the material in Anne Langton's journals and letters in 1950 under the title "A Gentlewoman in Upper Canada".

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The major part of the Langton Family Papers, including the art work of Anne Langton, was donated in 1953 to the Archives of Ontario by the Trustees of the estate of Hugh Hornby Langton (1862-1953), former Librarian, University of Toronto, the youngest and last surviving son of John Langton. A daguerreotype and an ambrotype were donated by Noel Currer-Briggs in November of 1979. A further donation of textual records and two pencil sketches was made by Mr. Currer- Briggs in December of 1979. In July 2001 Patrick Garland, godson of the late Michael Langton of London, England, made a donation of ten more Langton family miniatures to the Archives' Langton holdings. In 2006, three additional ivories were purchased from a vendor in the United Kingdom. The ivories depict Thomas Langton, Ellen Langton (Anne Langton's parents) and Miss Harriet Lowe (friend of Anne Langton).
