Scope and Content

Fonds consists of Alexander Fraser's correspondence, accounts, certificates, commissions, speeches, lectures, sermons, literary works in English and Gaelic, notes and notebooks, minutes and reports of various societies and associations, military documents, biographical and genealogical information, menus, invitations, cards, programmes, photographs, poetry, music, maps, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and printed material.

Correspondence consists of personal letters, blotter-copy letterbooks from Fraser's editorial work with various newspapers, letterbooks from his activities with the Sons of Scotland and with the 48th Highland Regiment of Toronto, as well as loose letters relating to the establishment of an archives in Ontario, his work as Provincial Archivist, his duties as Official Secretary and Aide-de-Camp to the Lieutenant Governor, and relating to his association with historical societies, academic institutions, the Royal Canadian Institute, the Empire Club, Scottish organizations, and the Presbyterian Church. Also included are some copies of letters of Captain Malcolm Fraser, letters relating to the War of 1812, and letters of the Reverend Dr. Egerton Ryerson.

Certificates and commissions relate to Fraser's membership in the Presbyterian Church, in various academic and fraternal organizations, his military qualifications, and his appointments as a notary public, a justice of the peace, and as a special representative for the province of Ontario at the International Exposition at Havana, Cuba in 1924.

Accounts include assessment notices, cancelled cheques, duplicate deposit slips, invoices, price lists, notes, receipts, statements and vouchers covering such items as church contributions, interest and mortgage payments, insurance premiums, membership fees, subscriptions, travelling expenses, and utilities.

Fonds also includes: invitations to various functions, tickets and passes; business, social, and greeting cards; programmes of concerts, carnivals, religious ceremonies, meetings and special events; and menus for dinners attended by Fraser.

Also included are speeches made by Fraser when unveiling monuments, opening museums, accepting honorary degrees, and in addressing clubs, schools, and societies.

Fonds also contains various writings of Fraser, which include "A History of Ontario," and essays on archives, Celtic art and music, as well as early settlement in Upper Canada and Nova Scotia. Also included are various notes and diaries kept by Fraser while en route to Canada from Scotland, and while on a trip to Moose Factory. Gaelic writings consist of articles, sermons, addresses, poetry, songs, publications, and notes.

Fonds also includes records of various societies and associations with which Fraser was involved, including minutes, annual reports, constitutions, and by-laws.

Also included are poems submitted for publication in the Scottish Canadian, as well as music, consisting of anthems, hymns, and patriotic, regimental, and Scottish songs.

Fonds also contains various photographs of Alexander Fraser and family, people and places in Canada and Scotland, and group pictures taken at Scottish gatherings and visits of state. Also included are various drawings of individuals and places, crests and insignia, as well as an illustrated catalogue for Rowan and Co. (men's tailors). Also included are various maps, mainly of parts of Ontario and surrounding areas.

Fonds also includes genealogical and biographical information on a number of families, clippings taken from Scottish, Canadian, and American newspapers and periodicals, and printed material (including pamphlets, reports, offprints, and copies of periodicals).

Administrative History or Biographical Sketch

Alexander Fraser (1860-1936) was a journalist, historian, lecturer, Official Secretary and A.D.C. to the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario from 1914 to 1933, and the first Archivist of Ontario, from 1903 to 1935.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Fonds was donated to the Archives of Ontario in 1973 by Dr. William J. Cameron, Dean of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. An accrual to the fonds was donated in 2006 by Mrs. Shelagh Goldschmidt, daughter of Alexander Fraser and in 2012 by Nicholas Ignatieff.
