Ontario Government Record Series RG 2-71
ca. 2500 photographs : black and white prints
Series consists of photographs used by the Audio-Visual Education Branch of the Ontario Department of Education as visual aids in schools. The photographs were originally taken between 1910 and 1940, and later came into the custody of the Audio-Visual Branch, which applied a classification system to them.
The photographs cover a wide range of subjects including including historic sites in Ontario, Native people, health, school, transportation, the lumber industry, and the mining industry among many others.
The arrangement given to the photographs is by subject and geographic location. Each broad subject area has been assigned an alphabetical reference. Within many of the subjects the photographs have been arranged alphabetically by their geographic location. The first letter of the geographic location has been added to the subject reference.
Example: CO = Ontario, COG = Place names in Ontario beginning with the letter G
Many of the subjects have also been further subdivided by subject and an additional alphabetical reference added to the subject reference. All of the alphabetical references appear on dividers within each box and on the photographs themselves.
Example: Y = Agriculture, YH = Agriculture, Horticulture
Both the original order and alphabetical references used by the Audio-Visual Education Branch have been maintained. Within each broad subject area the photographs have been assigned a unique alphanumeric reference. The alphabetical portion refers to the subjects and geographic locations of the photographs. The number refers to the unique number that has been assigned to each photograph within the broad subject areas.
Below is a list of all of the broad subject headings and their alphabetical references:
New Ontario (CN)
Native People (JY)
Technical Schools (T)
Ontario Agricultural College (Z)
Many of the photographs in this series are believed to have been take by the Lantern Slides Branch of the Ontario Motion Picture Bureau between 1917-1934.
