Scope and Content

Sub-series consists of letters received by the Secretary of the Immigration Department from federal and provincial immigration agents. It also includes letters from individual immigrants regarding availability of land, transportation and the immigration of relatives.

The correspondents include immigration agents representing both the federal and provincial governments in Britain; the federal Department of Agriculture; emigration societies in Canada and Britain; houses of refuge; and individuals or organizations seeking opportunities to promote emigration to Ontario. There is also correspondence from individual emigrants seeking information on financial support, job opportunities, land availability and related issues. There is a large number of letters pertaining to the refund of money connected with emigration schemes.

The material has been arranged by the number assigned to them by the Department of Immigration.

Original records are closed for conservation reasons. Researchers must use self service microfilm, MS 847.
