Ontario Government Record Series RG 11-7
1 volume of textual records
Series consists of an inspection report of Home Children who had been sent to Ontario in the several years preceding 1875 and 1886, when the inspections were carried out. The report is in the form of a register which includes the following headings: name; age; where [the child was] born [city / town or in some cases country are given]; if [the child has] been in [a] workhouse and where [city]; when [s/he] came to Canada [year]; with Miss Rye or Miss MacPherson; religion; name and post office address of guardian or employer; wages per month; nature of employment; remarks on conduct; etc.
Children are listed as having been sent out to placements in the following communities in Ontario: Newcastle, Bradford, Mount Forest, Guelph, Chatham, and London. While most of the children listed in the report are English, names of a few Irish and Scottish children also appear. These inspections were performed under pressure from British authorities and humanitarians who were concerned about abusive living conditions.
Library and Archives Canada also has juvenile immigration records, including inspection reports. See RG 76, Series R1206-158-4-E (formerly Series RG 76-C-4). Some reels of microfilm from Library and Archives Canada RG 76 are available at the Archives of Ontario.
See Volume RG 11-5-0-4 Copybook of receipted accounts. Loose documents found in this volume and filmed after the volume include a four-page children's inspection report.
See RG 11-2-0-1 Kingston Emigrant Agent's Letterbook for a short list of Home Children.
Volumes RG 11-4-0-3, RG 11-4-0-4 and RG 11-4-0-5 of the Toronto Emigrant Office arrival and destination registers contain entries referring to Home Children.
After Confederation (1867), responsibility for immigration was shared by the provincial and federal governments. Inspections of these children were carried out by federal ("Dominion") immigration agents and the records probably were transferred to provincial authorities at a later date.
