Ontario Government Record Series RG 11-4
6 volumes of of textual records
Series consists of registers containing mainly statistical information on immigrants arriving in Toronto. These records were kept in order to monitor trends regarding the numbers of immigrants; their characteristics; and their movements and settling patterns including whether they were staying in Canada or passing through to the United States. Information recorded typically includes: date; [sometimes] name [of individual or head of family]; nationality [of individual or family]; occupation; name of ship; # of male and female adults and children, infants; total # of persons; destination. The later registers are increasingly standardized and statistical, which in some cases renders them less descriptive, though more consistent. Note that names of immigrants from continental European countries other than Germany often were not recorded even in volumes where names are otherwise given.
Library and Archives Canada also has immigration records, including inspection reports. See in particular RG 76, Series R1206-158-4-E (formerly Series RG 76-C-4) for juvenile immigration records. See also series RG194-67-1-E (formerly RG 17-A-III-R) for arrival records beginning in 1861. Some reels of microfilm from Library and Archives Canada RG 76 are available at the Archives of Ontario.
