Scope and Content

Sub-series consists of indices to applications for land grants made by volunteers in the South African war. Applications for "standard" grants, as well as those for next of kin and for nurses, correspondents, and "others" such as the Red Cross Commissioner and the Y.M.C.A. Secretary, are recorded in the indices.

Entries in the indices are arranged in rough alphabetical order and note: the surname and first name of the applicant; a page number; the applicant's place of residence; and remarks (a five-digit application file number).

In cases where no land was awarded, applications were filed together by their application number. These unsuccessful applications can be found in Sub-series RG 1- 99-6, Miscellaneous correspondence and applications concerning South African volunteer land grants. In cases where the application was successful, a number is recorded in the "page" column of the indices: this number constitutes the land grant number.

"Standard" land grants were grouped together alphabetically by the first letter of the surname of the applicant and each group of grants was numbered sequentially beginning with the number one. The land grant file number, coupled with the first letter of the applicant's surname, constitutes the reference for the land grant. For example, the name "Jones, William" appears in one of the indices. In Jones' entry, the number "235" appears in the page column. Thus, the reference for the file for William Jones would be J / 235; the land grant files are found in Sub-series RG 1-99-4, South African volunteer land grant files.

Special type land grants are indicated in the indices through a variety of symbols: A "d" between the surname and the first name indicates an application made by a next of kin; A "NK" after the grant number indicates also indicates an application made by a next of kin; A "X" recorded in red after the grant number indicates a nurse or Red Cross application.

Each of these special types of grants are grouped together separately and numbered sequentially.
