3 volumes of textual records

Scope and Content

Series consists of registers of letters relating to surveys which were received by the Surveying Department, Canada West.

Entries within the first two volumes (Volume RG 1-5-0-1 and Volume RG 1-5-0-2) are arranged in broad subject categories (e.g., township name, town name) and then chronologically within each subject grouping. Subject groups are arranged alphabetically within the volume. The same system applies to the third volume (Volume RG 1-5-0-3) with the exception that the subject groupings are not alphabetically arranged .

Entries consist of: a description of the piece of correspondence received; the name of the correspondent (often a surveyor); the date of the correspondence; the date the correspondence was received in the department; and the manner with which it was dealt. Each entry also contains a unique reference number, presumably assigned to the piece of incoming correspondence; however, attempts to locate the original piece of correspondence in other series of records (both by using the date of the item and the reference number) have been unsuccessful.

Finally, most entries contain a reference to the response provided. These references consist of the abbreviation "LRS" (for "Letters Relating to Surveys) as well as the appropriate original volume and page numbers. Letters relating to surveys can be found in Sub-series RG 1-3-2 (Letters relating to surveys written by the Surveyor General).
