Ontario Government Record Series RG 1-386
3 volumes of textual records
Series consists of registers documenting clergy reserve sales between 1829 and 1924.
In July 1827 an act was passed by the Imperial Parliament authorising the sale of part of the clergy reserves of Upper Canada. Sales in any one year were not to exceed 100,000 acres, nor was the land sold to exceed 1/4 of the total clergy reserve allotment. Peter Robinson, Commissioner of Crown Lands, was named agent for sales. Terms of payment were outlined in a report of the Executive Council prepared in 1828 and were revised over subsequent years.
Entries are grouped together by township and record: the date of the sale; the name of the purchaser; the location (lot and concession) and acreage of the reserve; the sale number; and a certificate number. Some entries are annotated with the letter "P", perhaps for "purchase" or "patent".
A township index is found at the front of each volume.
Other records relating to the sale of clergy reserves can be found in Series RG 1-21, Returns and statements relating to the sale of Crown lands and clergy reserves and throughout RG 1.
