Scope and Content

Series consists of registers and schedules recording applications to purchase public lands (Crown and clergy reserves) submitted between 1826 and 1854. Under Rules and Regulations for the granting of land, outlined in an order-in-council of 21 November 1825 which took effect as of 1 January 1826, persons wishing to purchase public lands (Crown and clergy reserves) were required to submit a written application to government (before 1827, through the Surveyor General's Office; after 1827 through the Crown Lands Department). Once district land agencies were established in 1838, local land agents received and forwarded all applications to the Crown Lands Department.
