Scope and Content

Series consists of bound volumes containing minutes and reports of the Hesse District Land Board for the period 1789 to 1794.

There is an index to contents at the front of each volume. An undated notation by Samuel Ridout, Assistant Clerk in the Surveyor General's Office, notes that these volumes were indexed in the Surveyor General's Office ca. 1818.

Some reports, copies of minutes, and other records submitted by the Land Boards to the Executive Council can be found in the Land Minute Books (RG 1, L 1) and as enclosures with petitions (RG 1, L 3 L to 1791 and RG 1, L 3 thereafter), which are also located at Library and Archives Canada.

Under a Proclamation of 24 July 1788, Lord Dorchester divided southern Ontario into four districts. The Hesse District encompassed the area west of a line running due north from the tip of Long Point on Lake Erie. In 1792 under 32 Geo. III c.8, the name of the Hesse District was changed to the Western District

The contents of Volume RG 1-178-0-1 to RG 1-178-0-3 were published in the Third Report of the Bureau of Archives for the Province of Ontario, 1905, pp. 1-269. The contents of Volume RG 1-178-0-5 were published in the Third Report of the Bureau of Archives for the Province of Ontario, 1905, pp. 269-299. The report can be found in the Sessional Papers, 1906, no. 41, available on self-service microfilm B97, reel 94.

These records are incomplete. In the Board's minutes of 8 June 1792, its Secretary, D.W. Smith, recorded that the Board's records consisted of "three General Registers, and 19 attendant ones thereon; besides all the other papers which are sorted and classed."
