Scope and Content

Fonds consists of the records of the Canadian Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and also includes records from subordinate bodies including the Ontario Provincial WCTU and Toronto District WCTU. Also represented are a number of Ontario county, district and local branches of the union. The fonds also contains material from all of the provincial unions across Canada, and some material from the World Union and numerous national associations.

Records created by the Canadian WCTU include: correspondence, addresses, cash books, convention programs, financial documents, minutes and minute books, reports, and scrapbooks.

Records of the Ontario WCTU include: correspondence, addresses, convention programs, directories, minute books, reports, cash books, directories and annual reports.

Records of Ontario county, district and local unions mostly consist of minute books. Also included are: correspondence, pamphlets, cash books, reports, programs, directories, and membership records.

Local unions represented in the records include: Algoma, Bascom, Brantford, Cornwall, Dunville, Essex County, Fairmont, Glengarry, Stormont, and Dundas Counties, Grey County, Grey and Dufferin Counties, Haldimand-Norfolk, Hamilton District, Hastings County, Howard Park, Huron County, Ingersoll, Keswick, Lakeshore, Lambton County, Lanark, Lancaster, Leamington, Leeds and Frontenac, Lincoln County, Lochiel, Lindsay, London, Madison, Markdale, Meaford, Mimico, Mizpah, Newmarket, New Toronto, North Toronto, Norwhich, Ontario and Durham Counties, Ottawa, Owen Sound, Pembrooke, Peterborough and Northumberland County, Picnic Grove, Plainville, Renfrew County, Richmond Hill, Riverdale, Rutherford, St. Catharines, Salford, Sault Ste. Marie, Toronto, Stouffville, Tillsonburg, Victoria County, Waterloo County, West Hill, Windsor, Woodstock, Wychwood, and York and Peel Counties.

Records of the provincial unions consist of: minutes, reports, yearbooks, convention programs, directories, pamphlets, periodicals and some correspondence. Provincial WCTU documented in the records include: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan.

Records of the World Union and national unions include: correspondence, convention materials, pamphlets, reports, bulletins, and a visitors book. National unions represented are: Australia, Britain, China, Germany, India, Scotland, South Africa and the United States. Also included are eight posters from the WCTU India. The posters contain script in the Tamil language.

Fonds also contains WCTU publications, 1885-1991. These include: The Woman's Journal, Canada's White Ribbon Bulletin, The Canadian White Ribbon Tidings, The Canadian Eager Beaver, and WCTU Ontario News Bulletin.

Fonds also includes photographs created and accumulated by the Canada WCTU that document a camp in Petawawa, a chapel dedication ceremony, an orphan's home in Korea, and the 1903 World Congress in Geneva.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The records were donated to the Archives of Ontario from the Canadian Office of the Women's Christian Temperance Union in 1987. Accrual donations were then received in 1988 and 1996.
