Scope and Content

Fonds consists of five manuscript diaries. The diaries document: Chesley's involvement with native Indian bands and chiefs; the flow of office business; politics in a government as it was stationed at Montreal; Quebec and Toronto; social events as viewed by an individual having access to the highest orders of society; diet and menus; family events and business; and the weather.

Administrative History or Biographical Sketch

Solomon Yeomans Chesley (1796-1880) was a public servant with the Indian Affairs Department and politician active in the Cornwall, Ontario area between 1813 and the 1860's.
