Scope and Content

Sub-series consists of files documenting Conn Smythe's tenure as President of Maple Leaf Gardens Ltd. and the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey club, as a governor in the National Hockey League (NHL) and his general activities related to the game of hockey in Canada.

Sub-series contains records relating to Smythe's involvement and business dealings with the National Hockey League head office, NHL teams and the NHL Player's Association. This includes union certification and anti-trust files, NHL constitutions and by-laws, semi-annual and annual meetings of owners files, officiating records, financial statements, and relations committee files including copies of agreements between the NHL and amateur hockey leagues.

Sub-series also includes extensive incoming and outgoing correspondence with NHL President Clarence Campbell, managers, coaches, employees serving overseas during the war, son Stafford Smythe and the Hockey Committee of the Toronto Maple Leafs; and legal agreements between the St. Patrick's Hockey Club, Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club and Arena Gardens and between Smythe and Madison Square Gardens (1926-1931).

Also included are memos and personal hockey notes documenting the observations, analysis and decisions of Smythe regarding hockey team personnel and game strategy (1946-1961); financial records including player salaries, box office receipts, expense sheets, annual accounts, statements of profit and loss, and investments for Maple Leaf Gardens; records relating to the establishment, construction, inauguration and subsequent operation of the Hockey Hall of Fame and Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto; a file relating to Smythe's confrontation with Attorney-General Roy McMurtry over hockey violence (1976); interview transcripts; early team autographs (1933-1934) and Maple Leafs team newsletters (1940-1941).

Sub-series also includes five Maple Leaf Gardens seating plans created in 1931 by Ross and MacDonald Architects and associates Jack Ryrie and Mackenzie Waters. The plans were revised in 1946 by J.R. Barlow and revised again in 1960. Some of the early plans were annotated.
