Scope and Content

The M.O. Hammond fonds reflects Hammond's career and interests as a journalist, writer, editor, amateur photographer and figure of the Canadian arts and literary scene in the early decades of the twentieth century.

It includes photographs in various formats created and/or collected by Hammond primarily as a result of his work as an amateur - yet proficient and prolific - photographer, as well as in his capacity as Arts Editor for the Globe. The photographs document Hammond's extensive travels throughout Canada and the United States and include images of urban and rural landscapes, statues, monuments and notable sites. Hammond also photographed personalities so there are numerous portraits of individuals or groups in the fonds including photos of his family.

It also consists of correspondence relating to Hammond's research and writing including correspondence received from Duncan Campbell Scott, Arthur Stringer, Charles G.D. Roberts and Robert Service. among others; published and unpublished manuscripts written by Hammond; research notes and clippings related to his writing on Canadian history, art and literature and his reporting of reciprocity negotiations between Canada and the United States in 1910-1911; notebooks; offprints of articles written by Hammond; posters and other collected printed material; and his personal diaries for the years 1890, 1894 and 1903-1934.
