Scope and Content

Series consists of certificates issued by emmigration societies, or agents representing Ontario, to individuals in the United Kingdom who were emigrating to the province. They certified the good character of the person and that they would contribute toward the development of the province. The certificates also recorded the amount of financial support contributed toward their emigration. The certificates were presented to the appropriate immigration agent in Ontario who would send an acknowledgement to the sponsor in Britain.

The certificates record the name of the emigrant, their destination in Ontario, the amount paid towards their passage and the number of family members.

The records are arranged alphabetically by the name of the emigrant.
