Typically, the Commission met once or twice a year with the exception of 1844, when no session of the Commission was held. Minutes were kept for each session of the Commission. Each session as assigned an alphabetical letter as an identifier until 1845, when this procedure was abandoned. Each claim heard within a session was assigned a unique number, beginning with the number one.

Many of the volumes of minutes consist of rough or draft minutes kept by the secretary of the Commission.
