Ontario Government Record Series RG 1-173
1 volume of textual records
Series consists of a register listing "Fiats in School Townships" which were issued by the Surveyor General's Office between 1824 (# 1) and 1845 (#178). In the late 1790s, townships, six of which were located east of York, as well as parts of two additional townships, were set aside as "school townships" to help support grammar schools and King's College, York. Few sales were made and, under an order-in- council dated 14 May 1823, the school lands were placed at the disposal of the General Board of Education for Upper Canada, which was given responsibility for selling them off. Although the powers of the General Board of Education were terminated in 1833, school reserves continued to be sold by agents which it had appointed as well as by the Commissioner of Crown Lands. After 1841, responsibility for the reserves, now known as grammar school lands, was placed under the control of the Commissioner of Crown Lands.
An alphabetical index by purchaser's name is located at the back of the volume.
Entries record: the Surveyor General's Office number; the Attorney General's Office number; the name, occupation and place of residence of the purchaser; the lot, concession, township and acreage of the land granted; the date of the Attorney General's fiat; and a description number. School land sales descriptions are identified with the prefix "SLS". Some entries also note the purchase price received, and the name of the person or body to whom the monies were paid.
