Ontario Government Record Series RG 1-149
3.75 metres of textual records
Series consists of individual fiats and warrants issued in conjunction to land grants to privileged persons and registers of these records. Through royal instructions, issued to Governor Haldimand (16 July 1783) and to Lord Dorchester (23 August 1786), and through an order-in-council of the colonial government, dated 9 November 1789, provisions were made for land grants to privileged persons - United Empire Loyalists and their children ("families who had adhered to the Unity of the Empire and joined the Royal Standard in America before the Treaty of Separation in the year 1783") and military claimants. These grants were free of all survey and patent fees. During the next half century, millions of acres of Crown land were transferred to privileged persons as a reward for their loyalty. It was a complex process to receive a land grant. Many offices were involved and each office (Executive Council Office, Receiver General's Office, Attorney General's Office, Surveyor General's Office, Provincial Secretary's Office, etc. ) maintained its own numbering system for the documents it generated or received relating to these transactions. Within the Surveyor General's Office, U.E. and M.C. fiats were numbered and filed separately from other types of fiats.
The series is arranged into four sub- series based upon the arrangement of records in the office of origin and records type.
