Scope and Content

Collection consists of records accumulated by Fred Jarrett, the majority of which are correspondence, reports, accounts, and other records relating to schools and other institutions in Ontario's Niagara peninsula. The school records include a proposed school Bill, a copy of a by-law to establish the Smithville County Grammar School, a circular letter regarding the inspection of Ontario schools, notifications of school trustee appointments, reports of meetings, and reports and half-yearly returns of the Niagara Senior County Grammar School, the Beamsville County Grammar School, the Grimsby County Grammar School, and the Smithville County Grammar School.

Also included are records pertaining to prisons and prisoners in Ontario's Niagara District. These records consist of an arrest warrant, a copy of a presentation made to the Grand Jury at Spring Assizes, Niagara, on the state of the jail; a report on the St. Catharines Gaol; and a circular letter regarding prison libraries.

The collection also contains miscellaneous documents relating to land transactions, including deeds and contracts, an assessment return for the Village of Grimsby, Ontario, and a notice to creditors.

Other records include certificates of appointment of Reeves of St. Catharines, Ontario; Articles of Agreement regarding the construction of Jones' Bridge; correspondence pertaining to the case of Peter Gibbons versus N. Higgins; and a memorial of the Trustees of the St. Catharines General and Marine Hospital, requesting financial aid.

Administrative History or Biographical Sketch

Fred Jarrett was the manager of the Gregg Publishing Company, 30 Bloor Street West, Toronto. He also ran a business collecting and selling stamps. He was the author of Jarrett's B.N.A. Book, and also compiled Postage Stamps of Canada.

Custodial History

Records in this collection were originally from the Courthouse in St. Catharines, Ontario, and were later obtained by Fred Jarrett of the Gregg Publishing Company. Collection was acquired by the Archives of Ontario from Fred Jarrett in 1946.
