Scope and Content

Series consists of registers kept by the Registrar of the Surrogate Court in Belleville to serve as the court's record of all grants of probate, administration, or guardianship issued by the Surrogate Court of the Victoria District (1840-1849) and of the County of Hastings (1850-). Prior to 1858, there was no prescribed format for the books and so the content of the books may vary somewhat for this period. However, entries typically consist of transcripts of wills and letters probate in cases of probate, transcripts of letters of administration in cases of administration, and transcripts of appointment orders in cases of guardianship.
