- Scope and Content
Series consists of Surrogate Court registers. Registers, also known as probate and administration books, contain the court's copy of all grants of probate (in estates with wills) and administration (estates without wills). Until 1925 these volumes also include grants of guardianship. In the case of grants of probate, a copy of the will is also included with the grant. Included in the margins next to the grant entry is an estate file number (Series RG 22-260). The grant number is also included in the margin as a second number.
Up to Register E each volume is indexed. From Register F onwards, researchers should use the General Index (Series RG 22-257).
