Ontario Government Record Series RG 22-217
38 volumes of textual records
Series consists of Surrogate Court registers. Registers, also known as probate and administration books, contain the court's copy of all grants of probate (in estates with wills) and administration (estates without wills) issued by the Surrogate Court for the Brock District (1841-1849) and the County of Oxford (1850-). Prior to 1858, there appears to have been no standard format established for the Registers. As a result, the contents and organisation of the Registers for the early Surrogate Courts can vary. After 1858, a standard format was laid down.
The registers contains the court's copy of grants of probate and administration. Up to 1891, they also contain grants of guardianship. Prior to 1853, it appears that a proper register was not kept. For this early period, the only record of probates and administrations issued by the court was kept in a small register book which recorded the name of the deceased, the date of the grant, the value of the bonds, the executors (or administrators) and any remarks concerning the grant. Beginning in 1853, the usual form of register was kept with a proper copy of the grant of probate (with will) or administration.
Added into the margins of the registers is the corresponding grant/estate file (Series RG 22-221) number.
