Fonds consists primarily of photographic glass plate negatives as well as some prints and acetate negatives created by J.C. Smith in his role as an amateur photographer in Ridgetown, Ontario in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Subjects include individuals, families, residential and commercial architecture, schools, cottages, and tombstones in or near Ridgetown.
Related records may be found in series F 4359-40, Drawings of a Methodist church in Ridgetown, Ontario which contains architectural drawings of the church where J.C. Smith was choir master for 25 years. Related records may also be found in F 687, Hagaman & Jull family fonds. J.C. Smith worked at the Hagaman & Jull General Store in his youth.
The Archives of Ontario Library also holds one copy of Ridgetown Album: Historical Homes and Landmarks, 1875-1975, which includes reproductions of many of the glass plate negatives in this fonds.
The titles of the images have been supplied by the archivist based on information found either on the images themselves where available, the subject depicted, or if the glass plate was reproduced and identified in the book Ridgetown Album: Historical Homes and Landmarks, 1875-1975, available in the Archives of Ontario Library. In some instances, the donor has assisted with identification.
