Scope and Content

Fonds consists of documents created or received by various members of the Cartwright family, relating to their genealogy, land holdings and political and business activities in the Kingston, Ontario area. The records were created and accumulated by a number of prominent members of the family, especially Richard Cartwright, his sons John Solomon Cartwright and the Reverend Robert David Cartwright, the latter's wife Harriet (Dobbs) Cartwright and their son, Sir Richard Cartwright.

The records have been arranged into seven series which correspond primarily to various accruals to the fonds: a large series of chronologically arranged records, original and copied letterbooks of Richard Cartwright, a letterbook of Harriet Dobbs, applications of loans to the Frontenac Loan and Investment Society, wills and marriage contracts, and John S. and Robert D. Cartwright correspondence.

Chronologically arranged records, which comprise the bulk of the fonds, consists of deeds, tax receipts, wills, correspondence, receipts, mortgages, agreements, bonds, statements of expenditures and revenues, and other miscellaneous items. The earliest documents deal almost entirely with property transactions, especially those of Richard and John Solomon Cartwright. Correspondence appears more frequently in the 1840s. Beginning in the early 1860s, the records relate entirely to the life and career of Sir Richard Cartwright. There is a great deal of correspondence relating to his political career with such individuals as John A. Macdonald, Alexander Mackenzie, Edward Blake and Mackenzie Bowell.

The life and activities of Richard Cartwright are well-documented in his letterbooks. His property transactions are traced in the chronological records as are the activities of his son, John Solomon. John Solomon and his twin brother, Robert David, dominate the correspondence.

Administrative History or Biographical Sketch

The Cartwright family were businessmen and politicians active in the Kingston, Ontario area from the 1780's to the present.

Richard Cartwright (1759-1815) came to Upper Canada from the United States, where he served in the military and became involved in various business ventures, including the purchase of the Kingston Gazette to which he contributed articles under the pseudonym "Falkland".

John Solomon Cartwright (1804-1845) was a lawyer in Kingston, Ontario during the early nineteenth century, who also became deeply involved in banking, real estate, and politics.

Robert David Cartwright (1804-1843) was an Anglican minister in Kingston, Ontario during the early nineteenth century.

Harriet Dobbs (1808-1887) came to Upper Canada from Ireland with her husband, Robert D. Cartwright (1804-1843), where she became deeply involved with the Female Benevolent Society in Kingston.

Sir Richard John Cartwright (1835-1912) was a politician from Kingston, Ontario, who became Minister of Finance, Minister of Trade and Commerce, and was appointed to the Senate in 1904.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Most of the chronological correspondence was received from Henry Cartwright on indefinite loan between 1934 and 1935. An additional 24 letters and a letterbook were received from the same person in 1952. In 1993, these records were offically donated to the Archives by John R. Cartwright Additional letterbooks were copied (some on paper, some on microfilm) from the Queen's University Archives in 1959, and an additional 25 manuscript letters were donated in 2001 by Professor Charles W. Humphries of the University of British Columbia.
