Scope and Content

Series consists of orders issued by the Ontario Municipal Board (O.M.B.) after adjudication of applications or appeals submitted by municipalities, companies or individuals.

The orders are the official record of the Board's decisions and include the board procedure file number and the signature of the Secretary. Before 1955, the written decisions, or reasons for judgement, for some cases were filed with the orders.

The cases fall into eight general categories of rulings: community planning issues such as official plans and amendments, site plans, subdivisions, consents to minor variances or land severance's, restricted area (zoning) bylaws; assessment appeals; municipal organization and administration decisions (incorporations, amalgamations, annexations, boundaries, Minister's zoning orders appeals, etc.); approvals of large municipal capital expenditure projects, issuing of debentures, and municipal indebtedness; joint hearings (e.g., with the Environmental Assessment Board); Rental Housing Protection Act appeals; land compensation for expropriation (1971-); and miscellaneous arbitration's and rulings on municipal matters made under the Municipal Act or the Ontario Municipal Board Act.

The orders are filed chronologically by date of issue in 75 sequential volumes for all categories of application (1906-1951), then chronologically by volumes with letter prefixes for the type of case (1952-1992): 1) Capital expenditure, or 2) Community planning, assessment appeals, municipal organization, etc., then chronologically by date of issue for all categories of application (1993- ) The orders for 1906-1910 are indexed. Subsequent volumes are individually indexed alphabetically by the municipality/ applicant, with the application/ appeal number, and the page in the order book. The order book entries up to 1988 are cross-referenced in the procedure books (Series RG 37-2).
