Scope and Content

Fonds consists of lantern slides and narration notes that were used by William H. Hammond while delivering a presentation about Toronto to the Toronto Camera Club and other organisations. Slides show Toronto from its early days as the French Fort Rouille, through its rapid development in the nineteenth century, and up to the early 1920s. Hammond gave this presentation in 1951, while he was likely president of the Toronto Camera Club.

Subject matter includes important Toronto buildings that have been demolished (Sword's Hotel, the first Union Station, the Normal School), local landmarks no longer standing (tollgate at Yonge & College, the Indian Clock, a statue in Queen's Park of Queen Victoria), well-known ships in Toronto Harbour, historic views of buildings still standing (Old City Hall, Queen's Park), aftermaths of several fires (including Toronto's Great Fire), the Orangemen's Parade, and views of downtown streets in the 1800s and early 1900s. Many of these early images are photographs of drawings, paintings, photographs, or etchings.

Photographers are from the Toronto Camera Club, including M.O. Hammond (no relation to creator), W.H. Moss, F. Baird, Bert Smith, G.R. Smith, and several others. Many of the slides have no identified photographer.
