Scope and Content

Fonds consists of personal and professional correspondence, speeches, notes, reports, photographs, audio-visual material and other material created or accumulated by Bob Rae throughout the course of his career as a public official and intellectual. Included are records created while he was a student at the University of Toronto in the 1960s and as assistant to the Canadian General Counsel of the United Steelworkers of America and as a teacher of industrial relations and labour law at the University of Toronto in the 1970s.

Included are records related to Rae's career as Member of Parliament for the riding of Broadview-Greenwood, as Leader of the New Democratic Party of Ontario, and as Premier of the province as well as records related to his tenure as a Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre and as the interim leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

Also included are records related to his campaign for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada, material that documents his position as co-chair of the Liberals' Platform Development Committee and member of the of the Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan.

Included is material created in his capacity as a senior partner at Goodmans LLP following his departure from provincial politics and before his re-emergence in politics at the federal level. In particular, the accrual documents Rae's work as the president of the Forum of Federations and his work with the governments of Afghanistan, Nepal, Iraq, Kenya, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, among others, on issues of federalism, constitutional design, global democracy and strategies for peace making.

Included are journals, diaries and notebooks kept by Bob Rae in which he kept track of his appointments and other daily meetings or in which he recorded his thoughts and feelings on any number of issues related to his personal life and political career.

Included is material created and/or accumulated by Rae's wife, Arlene Perly Rae, in her capacity as the partner of a member of the Legislative Assembly and the wife of the Premier of the Province as well as material that documents her career as a book reviewer, activist and arts advocate.

Also included is personal correspondence, photographs, audio video recordings of speeches, interviews, debates, campaign songs and other moments that document Rae's political activities throughout the course of his career.

Fonds has been arranged into 34 series and 13 sub-series.

Administrative History or Biographical Sketch

Robert Keith Rae (1948- ) is a Toronto based politician who was leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party (1982-1996), served as Premier of Ontario from 1990 to 1995 and as interim leader of the Liberal Party of Canada (2011-).
