Scope and Content

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by David Peterson, primarily during his careers as a lawyer, as a Liberal MPP, and as Premier of Ontario.

Textual records consist of materials dealing with a variety of offices and committees within the Premier's organization. These include records pertaining to or maintained by the Ontario Liberal Party's Research Director, the Premier's Special Assistant, the Policy Director, Executive Assistant, Chief of Staff, Communications Director, and Special Assistant to the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs. As well, files concerning constituency matters, political campaigns, administrative and leadership matters, searches for riding candidates, and other working files are included in the fonds. Noteworthy topics captured in these records include free trade, the Meech Lake Accord, the Liberal - NDP Accord, the Toronto Ontario Olympic Committee, and the Houlden Inquiry.

Fonds also includes sound and moving image materials which primarily reflect activities within the Premier's Press Office. Subjects of videocassettes include Christmas messages from David Peterson, Premier's tours, election announcements, interviews, tributes to individuals, coverage of Expo '86 in Vancouver, British Columbia and his swearing-in ceremony. Sound recordings deal with press conferences, task forces, speeches, Christmas messages, interviews and commercials.

Photographs in the fonds depict Peterson engaging in activities as an MPP prior to his selection as Ontario Liberal leader, as well as showing him as Leader of the Opposition and as Premier. As well, the fonds contains photos depicting Peterson meeting with dignitaries and attending various opening ceremonies, in addition to containing portraits of Peterson and members of his family.

Lastly, the fonds contains two sketch portraits of Peterson.

The fonds is arranged primarily by individual responsible for the office or function to which the records pertain. This type of arrangement has been imposed in the interests of continuity, as Peterson's aides generally took their files with them when moving from one office or function to another.

David Robert Peterson (1943-) was leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, and served as Premier of Ontario from 1985-1990.

Custodial History

Fonds was donated to the Archives of Ontario by David Peterson over three accessions in 1990, 1994 and 1995.

Records comprising the fonds were received from the various offices within the Office of the Premier and storage areas at Queen's Park, in addition to Peterson's London Centre constituency office, in the weeks following the September 6, 1990 general election. Also acquired in the process were 15 metres of official records, defined by Government of Ontario record schedules. These are separate from the personal political papers of Peterson and have been placed with other official records of the Office of the Premier (RG 3).
